Ballito is a 45-minute drive north of Durban and is an affluent ocean side community and frequent holiday destination for Durban’s rich and famous. The Secret Spot is at the heart of this community and a little piece of African Paradise. Overlooking Shaka’s Rock beach and set in amongst a dense forest of local indigenous trees the hostel is the ultimate retreat and the perfect place to finish the trip.
Run by former Durban Pro-Lifeguard Mike Smith and his wife Roz, the Secret Spot is a gem and is perfectly set-up to cater for your every need. Their daughter, Tammy-Lee is a professional surfer currently trying to qualify for the Top 16 World Tour. The poolside restaurant serves excellent food with a wood fired oven for the infamous pizza nights and TTRide farewell parties. The bar is well stocked and will provide you with a cool drink to enjoy in one of the many wicker recliners, or grab a couple of beers before you head into town to celebrate passing your courses and your new status as a surf instructor and a surf lifesaver!
Further to surfing, we are a short drive away from the game territories of the north and the Secret Spot will organise day trips to the Hluluhwe game reserve, home to the big five, and an evening cruise in the St Lucia estuary to view hippos and crocodiles in their natural environment. At Durban’s enormous Gateway shopping centre we will also book out a 2 hr slot on the Flowrider and you will soon realise it is not as easy as it looks to ride a still-wave!
As the final stop on the tour it’s time to take advantage of everything on offer!
