Ballito is a 45-minute drive north of Durban and is an affluent ocean side community and frequent holiday destination for Durban’s rich and famous. The Secret Spot is at the heart of this community and a little piece of African Paradise. Overlooking Shaka’s Rock beach and set in amongst a dense forest of local indigenous trees the hostel is the ultimate retreat and the perfect place to finish the trip.

Run by former Durban Pro-Lifeguard Mike Smith and his wife Roz, the Secret Spot is a gem and is perfectly set-up to cater for your every need. The poolside restaurant serves excellent food with a wood fired oven for the infamous pizza nights and TTRide farewell parties. The bar is well stocked to provide you with a cool drink that you can take to one of the many wicker recliners to sit back, relax and take in the view or grab a couple of beers before you head into town to celebrate passing your courses and your new status as a surf instructor and a surf lifesaver!

Ballito is where we will be wrapping up the surf lifesaver and surf instructor courses. The Secret Spot has an outdoor classroom for theory work and we will be heading into Durban for the water-based side. One of the most important areas is gaining your coaching hours and you will have the chance to coach children from one of the local schools for the handicapped and the disadvantaged. This is an extremely rewarding project as you will help these children take their first steps into the water and onto a board. It will also give you a chance to pass on all the knowledge that you have accumulated over the last 3 months of coaching and prepare you for life as a surf instructor.

When you’re not busy with the courses Ballito has a host of world class, tropical beaches and reefs to explore with quality surf on offer for all levels. With the trip drawing to a close and with new boards from Clayton, the TTRide instructors will be on hand to deliver any further instruction that you need before the trip ends and you strike out on your own.

Further to surfing, we are a short drive away from the game territories of the north and the Secret Spot will organise day trips to the Hluluhwe game reserve, home to the big five, and an evening cruise in the St Lucia estuary to view hippos and crocodiles in their natural environment.

As the final stop on the tour it’s time to take advantage of everything on offer!
