This introductory level course is suitable for candidates wishing to gain Surfing South Africa Surf Coach accreditation. The course requirements and syllabus covers basic surf rescue techniques and first aid, as stipulated by Surfing South Africa.
It is not a fully accredited Lifeguard or First Aid qualification.
Course Entry Requirements
Physical fitness and swimming evaluation:
400m pool swim in less than 9 minutes
Basic surf swimming experience
200m Beach run in under 1 minute
Physical Requirements:
Successful candidates will need to be able to complete the following surf swimming and rescue simulation evaluation activities, displaying a fair level of fitness and ability in the ocean and pool environment.
400m Pool Swim in under 9 minutes 30 seconds minutes

Surf lifesaving rescue techniques

Basic First Aid (RCSA - Heart Saver First Aid Criteria)
Expired Air and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation for Infant, Child & Adult
Supplementary Oxygen therapy
Aquatic spinal injury management
Course Duration
A minimum period of 32 hours (4 days) of instruction is required per course. This instruction is spread over a period of time and divided approximately into 60% practical and 40% theoretical training lectures.

Candidate Evaluation and Certification
The candidates are evaluated on all aspects of the award with the duration of the evaluation being approximately 3 hours. Successful candidates are certified through the Lifeguard Academy and the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa. Certification is valid for a period of 2 years.
