Look out across the lagoon and down to the deserted beach of Chintsa Bay and you’ll instantly realise why Buccaneers is one of the most popular backpackers in South Africa. Set on the edge of the Transkei and the Inkenkwesi game reserve, Buccaneers embraces the slower and more traditional pace of African life and offers a chance to experience the magic of the African Bush. Set away from the hassles of the city, Buccaneers offers you the chance to become an integral part of a small backpacking community, where new friends and new experiences await amidst the empty waves.

With 2 km of empty beach right on our doorstep there is never a shortage of things to do. Wake up early and check the waves from your room, cross the small wooden bridge and follow the path alongside the lagoon to the empty beach break waves out front. Have a home cooked meal in the restaurant, relax by the pool, have a massage, take a yoga class or simply head straight back to the beach and do it all over again.

With numerous surfing options on our doorstep we are ideally positioned to take advantage of the differing conditions on any given day. With gentle beachbreaks, point breaks, reef breaks and rivermouth breaks all within a short walk or drive, Buccaneers offers something for every level of surfer. Its out of the way location keeps crowds to a minimum and wave counts high making this a great stop to take your surfing to the next level. It’s a chance to experiment with your surfing and enjoy surfing empty waves with just your friends.

If the surf does go flat, or you simply need a break from the sea, there are a host of additional day trips and activities available. Included in our itinerary is a quad bike safari, offering you the chance to get up close and personal with some of Africa’s big game. In addition to this, take a mountain bike tour to a local Xosha village or take a horse ride on the beach. Make new friends with the afternoon volleyball tournaments or join the trips up to the Bucaneers sponsored local school where they arrange activity afternoons, or simply grab a paddle and take a boat out on the lagoon for sunset.
